Starting in 2017, many traditional food markets in China struggled to survive against the rise of new retail models and changing consumption patterns. Issues such as outdated infrastructure, an ageing vendor population, and inefficient business operations led to their decline, with many replaced by modern supermarkets and e-commerce alternatives.

However, traditional markets are more than just places of trade—they hold deep cultural significance, serving as the heart of a community where people connect, share stories, and access affordable fresh food.

Amidst this transformation, I undertook a project to document the last remaining traditional roofed market in central Nanjing before its redevelopment. To preserve its memory, I created a book combining documentary film photography, interviews, archival research, and data visualisation. This publication captures the market’s final days, the community’s stories, and its struggle against urban redevelopment, preserving the vibrant, lived-in atmosphere of human connections before it disappears.
